Did You Know?
Around Historic Cape Town Centre

This walk takes you right through the heart of the old city.

Start from the Grand Parade, between the Castle and the City Hall.

The ornate 1905 City Hall overlooks the Grand Parade, where 100,000 people came to hear Nelson Mandela speak on his release from prison.

Walk along Strand Street and turn left into Adderley Street.

Walking along Adderley, Cape Town's main street, you will see on your left flower-sellers, the grand 19th-century Standard Bank, the Groote Kerk and the Slave Lodge.

Continue on straight up Government Avenue pedestrian way.

To your left is the back of Parliament and the stately Tuynhuys, now the State President's office. If you detour a little to your right you will find yourself in the heart of the Company's Garden.

Turn right across the front of the South African Museum, left up Grey's Pass, right into Orange, and then right again into Long Street.

If you are feeling tired you can relax at the Baths here. Otherwise go window-shopping or sit and enjoy something to drink at one of the many bars and cafés.

Go down Long Street, turn right into Church Street, then left into Burg, right into Longmarket, down the side of Greenmarket Square, and then left along the pedestrian precinct of St George's Mall.

This is the heart of commercial Cape Town. In summer the area is alive with buskers, street-traders and shoppers.

Turn right into Strand, which will take you back to the Grand Parade.
